Posted in Category(ies):  Other NewsDairy

A piece by Jane Holton, Jane works in the semen store for Progressive Genetics and farms a 100 cow spring calving dairy herd with her father Peter, just outside Longwood, Co. Meath.

The Teagasc National Dairy Conference took place this week in two locations (Cork and Mullingar). I had the opportunity to attend in Mullingar on Wed 7th Dec. The theme for this year was ‘Technologies for Success’ which was stemmed from staying focused on what matters in Dairying not only in Ireland, but in New Zealand and across the industry internationally. There was also a major focus on looking after yourself as a farmer (and others) & getting rid of the stigma surrounding mental health in rural Ireland.

Henry Walsh plans for the Breeding Season

Posted in Category(ies):  Dairy

"The majority of dairy farmers are still in the middle of the calving season, but their thoughts will soon turn to the next breeding cycle. Martin Ryan spoke to..

"My farming goal is to produce more milk solids per hectare utilising more grazed grass from the milking platform," says Galway dairy farmer, Henry Walsh, who milk almost 300 cows near Oranmore. To achieve his objective, Henry focuses on three goals: to grow and utilise more grass per hectare through better soil fertility;

More days in milk through more compact calving and improved cow fertility"

Delivering nearly 500kg of milk solids with Holstein Friesian genetics

Posted in Category(ies):  Dairy

Husband and wife team, Brian James and Lorna Sixsmith, have a 130-cow spring-calving Holstein Friesian herd.

Based in Garrendenny, Crettyard, Co. Carlow, the couple’s herd increased from 115 cows in 2016. And in recent times, their milking platform has moved from about 49ha to 69ha.

The pair have farmed since 2002, after taking over from Lorna’s father, and farming has been a second career for them both.

The herd has an EBI of €149 and is currently ranked 28th on the latest EBI herd ranking (February 2017), with a fertility sub-index of €81, a production sub-index of €36 and +0.08% protein.

The herd is delivering 480kg of milk solids, while maintaining a 365-day calving interval and a 6% empty rate.

Improved performance on a rapidly-expanded top EBI herd

Posted in Category(ies):  Dairy

Seamus Knox runs a 150 cow spring-calving Holstein Friesian herd in South Kilkenny. Since the end of quotas the Ballygown herd has increased substantially.

Prior to quota removal, there were 60 cows on the farm and since 2015 cow numbers have increased rapidly.

Cow numbers increased to 90 in 2015, 120 last year and 150 this year and Seamus hopes to milk 160 cows in 2017.

Considering the huge “in house” growth in this herd post-quotas, it is unbelievable that 70% of the cows come from three-cow families.
