More and more farmers are focusing on sire selection especially when it comes to breeding replacements, matching the bull to the cow (and considering the all important stars in light of the BDGP Scheme, aiming for a replacement index of €74+ in any female progeny).
In many cases, it makes sense for farmers to breed their replacements' out of their top 4 & 5 Star cows and just use a terminal sire on 3 & lower Starred females.

Handsome sons leads the way at annual Athenry Sale
An outstanding Keltic Handsome (OKH) son, 'Oldtown Kenny' topped the May sale in Athenry, selling for €6,800. Bred by William Hogan, Thurles, Co.
