Limiting Night-time Calving FAQs

Limiting Night-time Calving FAQs

Can you change the time of day that cows/heifers calve?

Yes, by merely changing the time you feed your cows/heifers you can directly influence the time of calving. When you feed cows in the evening/night, you simply and most practically reduce the number of night-time calvings.

There are several benefits to eliminating night-time calving:

  • Calving difficulties are easier to manage during daylight
  • Assistance to be given early if neccessary, resulting in fewer deaths and also resulting in healthier more productive cows.
  • Daylight births give calves time to get dry, get fed (Colostrum/Biestings - 10% of calf's bodyweight) & treat their navel with iodine etc.
  • Farmers get more full (or fullish) nights sleep

Farm Safety The Lost Lifes & Injuries

Posted in Category(ies):  Other News

2014 was a horrendous year on Irish farms in terms of lost lives and injuries suffered.

All of us involved in the agri-industry should highlight the risks involved on an ongoing basis, the fact that 176 men, women & children have been lost through farm accidents in 9 years is horrifying. Please highlight on-farm inadequacies to your friends, family, neighbours and perhaps look a little closer yourself when on-farm.

Martin O’Halloran, the CEO of the HSA:

“The rate of fatal and serious accidents on farms is disproportionately high when you consider the numbers employed. Children and older people are particularly at risk.”

Stay Safe

This piece is mainly based around an infographic from the Irish Farmers Journal highlighting various statistics - from age of those who suffer on-farm deaths (11% of fatalities are children) to relationship to farm/farmer in relation to injuries (8.6% are spouses).
